The DHCP range, also known as the DHCP scope, is a list of IP addresses to include or exclude for assignment to DHCP clients. In other words, you can select a range of IP addresses that can be used by devices connected to your DHCP service.
A network administrator reserves a range of IP addresses for DHCP, and each DHCP client on the LAN is configured to request an IP address from the DHCP server during network initialization. The request-and-grant process uses a lease concept with a controllable time period, allowing the DHCP server to reclaim and then reallocate IP addresses that are not renewed. A range of IP addresses that a DHCP server can lease out to DHCP clients. You configure the DHCP scope using the Microsoft Windows NT administrative tool DHCP Manager or the Windows 2000 snap-in DHCP console. The IP addresses are leased for a specific Time to Live , usually three days. Information about scopes and leased IP addresses is stored in the DHCP database on the DHCP server. A DHCP Server is a network server that automatically provides and assigns IP addresses, default gateways and other network parameters to client devices. It relies on the standard protocol known as Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or DHCP to respond to broadcast queries by clients.
You must configure a DHCP range for the quarantine level so the member DHCP server can assign IP addresses within that range to unauthenticated DHCP clients. An unauthenticated client is allowed to access the captive portal only and must successfully pass the authentication process before it can receive an IP address from the authenticated range.
If the DHCP process is coming off a Cisco router/switch you can do an ip dhcp excluded range set. If you want to disable DHCP and enter your network settings instead, select the Use the following IP address option and enter values for IP address , Subnet mask , and Default Gateway .
